Getting started

I installed Essentials but I can't find it.

After installing, click the puzzle-piece Extensions icon in Chrome, then pin Essentials. The icon will appear directly in your toolbar. Other Chromium browsers use the same Extensions menu, though its position can differ.

How do I add a site?

Two ways:

How do I rename, edit, or remove an essential?

FAQ

Which browsers does Essentials support?

Any Chromium-based browser that supports Chrome extensions: Chrome 120+, Edge, Brave, Arc, Opera, and Vivaldi. Firefox is not supported. It uses a different extension API.

What version of Chrome is required?

Essentials requires Chrome 120+ · Edge · Brave · Arc · Opera · Vivaldi.

Can I export my essentials?

Yes. Open Essentials Settings → Sync tab → Export JSON… under Manual. You get a JSON file you can re-import in another browser installation or keep as a backup.

I'm seeing the wrong favicon for a site.

Right-click the tile and pick Replace icon… to upload your own image (PNG, JPEG, WebP, or SVG). Your choice syncs to desktop installations of the same browser using the same sync account and sticks until you reset it. Auth-walled sites and brand-redirected hosts sometimes hand us a generic icon. This is the cleanest fix.

To revert to the auto-resolved icon, right-click and pick Reset icon. Some sites also serve different icons to different browsers; the one we see first wins.

Sync isn't working in my second browser installation.

Essentials sync is enabled by default. Check the Sync tab in Essentials Settings in both desktop installations of the same browser. Both installations must use the same browser sync account with extension sync enabled, and the Essentials toggle must remain on. Different browsers use separate sync services and do not sync Essentials data with one another. Sync timing is controlled by your browser.

Are there Safari or Firefox editions?

Yes. Essentials for Safari is available on the Mac App Store for macOS 14+, and Essentials for Firefox installs in Firefox and Zen. Find the right edition via the Safari / Chrome / Firefox switcher in the site header. Each edition is a separate one-time purchase.
